Money Mindset: The Biggest Financial Advantage You Can Give Your Child

🚨 The biggest financial advantage you can give your child isn’t money. It’s the way they think about money.

Most parents focus on leaving their children an inheritance.

But the real inheritance is mindset.

Here are some of the biggest lessons I believe matter.

Growing Up With a Scarcity Mindset

➡️ I grew up with a scarcity mindset. My parents worked incredibly hard, but money always felt limited. As a child, I believed there was only so much money in the world, and if someone else had more, there was less available for us. That belief shaped how I viewed success for years.

Learning to See Wealth With an Abundance Mindset

➡️ One experience changed how I saw wealth. At around 12 or 13 years old, I rode home with a school friend whose family drove with the air conditioning on while the windows were open. Growing up, we were taught to switch lights off whenever we left a room. That moment wasn’t about wasting electricity. It made me realise wealthy people often viewed money through abundance rather than scarcity.

Why Giving Children Everything Can Backfire

➡️ Ironically, once I became a parent, I made the opposite mistake. For my son’s first five years, I tried giving him everything I never had. By the age of five he’d already been on around 60 flights, many of them business class. Looking back, I realised I wasn’t doing it for him. I was trying to heal my own childhood.

➡️ The more I studied parenting, the more I realised that giving children everything can actually work against them. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, has spoken about how struggle, failure and adversity often become the ingredients that build capable adults.

What an 80-Year Harvard Study Found About Chores

➡️ One study completely changed my thinking. An 80-year Harvard study found that the biggest predictor of a child’s future success wasn’t:

  • which school they attended,
  • how wealthy their parents were,
  • or how many opportunities they were given.

It was how many chores they regularly did at home.

The lesson wasn’t about chores.

It was about teaching children that hard work creates satisfaction before it creates rewards.

Teaching Kids About Money by Asking Questions

➡️ Instead of constantly giving answers, I now try to ask more questions.

Recently my son saw a lemonade stand outside his school.

Rather than explaining marketing, I asked:

“Why do you think they put the lemonade stand there instead of somewhere else?”

That simple conversation became a lesson about customer behaviour, business and location without him even realising it. Curiosity is a skill that compounds for life.

Exposing Children to Many Different Experiences

➡️ I also don’t believe children should be forced into one predetermined path.

Instead, we’re trying to expose our son to as many different experiences as possible:

  • sport,
  • coding,
  • AI,
  • different foods,
  • different hobbies,
  • different environments.

Children can’t discover what they love if they’ve never experienced it.

The Four Money Buckets: Save, Spend, Invest, Donate

➡️ The one money habit I hope stays with him forever is dividing every dollar into four buckets:

Remove any one of those four, and I think the framework becomes incomplete.

Why Purpose Matters More Than Generational Wealth

➡️ Finally, the greatest legacy I hope to leave isn’t property.

It isn’t money.

It’s a genuine desire to serve other people.

Money solves many problems.

But purpose gives money meaning.

I genuinely believe most parents spend too much time thinking about what they’ll leave their children, and not enough time thinking about who they’ll help their children become.

If you could teach your child just one lesson about money, what would it be?
